SketchUp 2014 Now Available

SketchUp updated its website and look for 2014. SketchUp 2014 includes some minor but significant updates. This includes  improved performance and speed with shadows and some new arc tools. BIM features are now available when creating geometry as well. This is now through the Classifier using industry standards and can be exported to other applications through IFC Export.

The 3D warehouse received a much needed facelift. The site is simplified and should make it easier to filter and preview the better models versus the ones you end up just throwing in the trash because the scale is entirely wrong or messed up.

Lastly, LayOut has some major improvements that excite me the most. I was resistant to use LayOut for some of my presentation and design work because of the minor bugs and missing features. In this release, you can use auto text tags, smart labels that reference geometry names from your model, improved vector rendering (thank you!!!!), and its snappier on larger files.

In all, the improvements to LayOut alone are worth a try to upgrade or update.

Cheers,

Dan

Adjunct Instructor at Harcum College for SketchUp Course

I’m really excited about teaching a SketchUp course at Harcum College this spring. The course is offered to Interior Design students. They will learn the workflow for creating interior renderings and animations using SketchUp. Students will also learn several plugins and techniques of the program.  I will hopefully put some of the students work on this blog to showcase their progress throughout the semester.

Residential Renderings

I had the pleasure of producing 2 renderings this month. The time frame was tight, but we were able to make changes quickly and produce these visuals so the client could approve the design development move into documentation.

Columbus Square Park Renderings

Columbus Square Rendering-111113-01-01
Over the past few months, I’ve been a part of a team of designers working on the redesign of Columbus Square Park. The project is through the Community Design Collaborative, a community design center that provides pro bono preliminary design services to nonprofit organizations in greater Philadelphia. As a volunteer member of the team, I was responsible for creating the illustrations that eventually manifested through various design meetings, reviews and coordination with public officials.

I also have a tie to the park, since it is only a few blocks from my house. I hope the renderings serve as a tool to help promote the possibilities of the park.
